Maybe you’ve been thinking about therapy animal work for a while now, but you’re not really sure where to start or what your next step should be.
You look at your pet and think, “They’re so sweet… I feel like they could do this!,” but then you get out into the real world and realize they’re not quite there yet, and suddenly it feels a lot bigger and more complicated than you expected.
Maybe you’ve tried some training already. You’ve worked on Sit, Down, walking on leash, maybe even a few outings,
but it’s not sticking the way you hoped...
or it only works sometimes...
or it falls apart the second real life gets involved.
Then, you go online to figure out what to do next and now you’re staring at a million different methods, opinions, tools, and “must-do” steps, and somehow you feel even more unsure than when you started.
If that’s where you are right now, you’re not behind, and you’re definitely not alone.
You just need a clear path.
Inside this guide, I’m going to walk you through the same path I use with my clients and members to go from “where do I even start?” to building a calm, confident therapy animal team.
Everything is laid out using the Trail to Success, so instead of trying to train everything at once, you’ll know exactly what to focus on next and how each step builds on the one before it.
We start with the foundation at home, where your pet learns how to relax, follow simple cues, and communicate clearly with you, and then gradually build toward real world skills

like walking through distractions, settling in public spaces, and handling new environments with confidence.
You’ll see how to move from Happy at Home to Around the Block, Out & About, and eventually to Weekend Warrior and beyond, without rushing the process or skipping the pieces that actually make everything work.
This isn’t about cramming in more commands or trying random tips from the internet.
It’s about having a clear, step by step path that fits into your real life, so you can make consistent progress without feeling overwhelmed or wondering if you’re missing something.

Imagine what it would feel like to head out the door with your pet and not have to wonder how it’s going to go.
To walk onto a restaurant patio, find a seat, and have your dog settle calmly at your feet while you sip your drink and actually relax.
To visit a nursing home, a school, or a community space and feel confident, knowing your pet is ready to handle it and you’re not just hoping for the best.
To go on walks, outings, and little everyday adventures without stress, without constant management, and without feeling like everything could fall apart at any moment.
To feel like a team.
Not you trying to control your pet, and not your pet just reacting to the world, but the two of you moving through life together, understanding each other and trusting each other.
That’s what we’re building.
Not just a “well trained pet,” but an Adventure Team that can show up in the world, make an impact, and actually enjoy the life you’re creating together.
This is how we raise the bar for therapy animal teams… and enjoy every adventure along the way!

I'm Laura King.
I’ve been training animals for over 15 years, with a special focus on helping dogs and cats become calm, confident therapy animals and adventure pets.
Before starting King’s Creatures Animal Training, I worked in zoos, shelters, veterinary settings, and behavior-focused training programs, where I saw firsthand how much training can change an animal’s life and the people around them. I’m a certified professional dog trainer and have served on both the therapy dog committee and the Board of Directors for the International Association of Canine Professionals. I’m also the founder of Living Creatures Ministry, where I help teams train and certify therapy animals for church and community work.
What I really care about is helping people take what could be possible with their pet and actually turn it into real life.
Most of the time, your pet is more capable than you think, and you’re doing more right than you realize. You just don’t have a clear, structured path to follow yet, so everything feels inconsistent, overwhelming, and harder than it needs to be.
That’s the piece I focus on: Taking everything I know about training and turning it into something that actually works in your day to day life, so you’re not guessing or trying to piece together a bunch of different approaches that don’t quite fit.

THIS IS FOR YOU!
This guide is for you if you’re ready to take what’s possible with your pet and actually turn it into real life.
If you’ve been thinking about therapy animal work and want a clear place to start.
If you want a calmer, more enjoyable day to day life with your pet, not just “better behavior,” but a relationship that actually works out in the real world.
If you like having a plan to follow, but don’t want training to take over your entire life or feel complicated and overwhelming.
If you’re willing to show up, stay consistent, and build something over time instead of looking for a quick fix.
This probably isn’t for you if you’re looking for a one-step fix or want someone else to do the training for you. Therapy animal training is a relationship-building process, and it’s one that’s absolutely worth it.
But if you’re ready to work together to become the best ever therapy animal team, you’re in the right place!
