Do you have a favorite pet-friendly business here in the Corridor? Tell us about them in the comments! Why aren’t big-name pet stores on this list?
You’ve probably noticed that I left out the national chain pet stores, even though they technically allow pets. That’s on purpose.
While these stores do welcome pets, they’re often chaotic and can be unsafe for training outings. It’s not uncommon to see dogs who aren’t under control, have poor manners, or shouldn’t be there in the first place due to behavioral or health concerns. I’ve seen everything from leash reactivity to surprise potty accidents. While the employees work incredibly hard to keep the space clean, it’s a tall order.
That’s why I avoid using those stores for training field trips and don’t recommend them as pet-friendly destinations. When we take our dogs or cats out in public, especially for therapy animal or adventure pet prep, we want calm, structured environments that set our pets and the public up for success. Let’s keep our outings positive, safe, and sanitary for everyone.
Important Note:
Some stores may seem pet friendly because other shoppers or even employees say it’s ok, but that’s not always the case. For example, Theisen’s is not pet friendly due to Iowa Food Code regulations, and Home Depot’s national policy does not allow pets in stores. Please help set a great example of responsible pet ownership by respecting store policies and supporting service dog teams by only bringing your pet where they’re truly welcome.
I just called Theisens in Coralville and they allow dogs on a leash!

Yepp so according to their official FB page, all Michaels locations are dog-friendly except where its prohibited by law. If there’s a location that isn’t allowing them, where it is legal, then they request that you contact them with the info so they can investigate, as they should be allowing any well-behaved dogs, except in their classes.
